I took a ride on the new Interstate 40 section in Greensboro today.

The road was really nice, even though the only real exit on it is the Wendover Avenue picture above. I'm not sure when that new High Point Road interchange will open.

Also, Interstate 73 was mentioned a few times as well.

On the older 2004 Interstate 85 part, Interstate 40 is now signed on it as well, although I noticed the signs on the interchanges still showed Interstate 40 as "To Interstate 40".

New Section of Urban Loop to Open Tomorrow!

Well it's about time!

Tomorrow, the next section of the Greensboro Urban Loop, from Interstate 40 near the airport to Interstate 85 in SW Greensboro will open. This will be exactly 4 years after the Interstate 85 bypass section opened.

Again folks, I can not stress this enough. Interstate 40 will be moved onto the new section of the loop, including the 2004 Interstate 85 section. The old section of Interstate 40 will be renamed Business 40.

This also means that Death Valley will no longer have an Interstate other than an Interstate business route. I just hope the DOT doesn't wait 6 months to replace the old exit number signs and shields on the old Interstate 40.

I will try my best to take a ride on it tomorrow afternoon and take pictures. Tomorrow might not be the best day for me because I may have other plans to tend to.

Grand Opening of Western Loop Segment

Well after 3 1/2 years, the next chapter of the Greensboro Urban Loop has begun.

This section, which runs from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard, is about 4 miles long and includes exits for Interstate 40, Friendly Avenue, and Bryan Boulevard.

One of the most interesting things I noticed was the extensive use of Interstate 73 markers. It appears that they're really serious about routing the new Interstate onto the loop.

New Section of Greensboro Loop to Open Tuesday

Well, it's been since February 2004 that the last segment of the Greensboro Urban Loop opened. Well, the next wait is about over.

According to WFMY News 2, a three mile segment of the loop from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard near PTI Airport will open Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 10:00 AM.

I doubt you will be seeing signs for it, but this segment will be a part of the future Interstate 840 and if all goes well, it may even be a part of the future Interstate 73.

The exciting part, the segment from Interstate 40 to the current end near Grandover Resort won't open until early 2008.

Coincidentally on August 4, 1976, Carolina Circle Mall opened at 10:00 AM as well. Coincidence? I think not! I apologize for my really bad comedy.

18th Birthday

Well, at 11:30 this morning, I officially turned 18.

18 is a pretty big step. During my 18 years of life, I've seen roads open, stores open and close, schools close, and malls close. I've seen a lot and I'm looking forward to what's ahead of me during the next 18 years.

Great Progress on Painter Boulevard

I must say that the current segment of the Greensboro Urban Loop that is under construction is making pretty great progress.

What I've seen so far recently:

Concrete and pavement have seemed to have been laid out.
Sign posts have been put up and even a couple of signs.
You can now make out the on/off-ramps.

What still needs to be done:

More road signs need to be put up.
Lines need to be painted.
Medians need to be installed.

Now please bare with me on these observances. I've mainly seen the interchange at Interstate 40 in-between Exits 211 & 213 so those observances are greatly localized to that one area.

Overall, I wouldn't be surprised to see this road open in November.

Concord Mills Carousel

This is about the only picture I took at Concord Mills today that didn't come out blurry.

This carousel definately was not there when I was last there in 2004. It's a relatively small carousel, but looks pretty cool. I really like those string like neon lights at the top. Just like Carolina Circle Mall, the carousel is located at the mall's food court.

I took a trip to the Concord Mills mall in Concord (Near Charlotte) today and took 58 road sign pictures that can be viewed here.

What really caught my attention was how much progress has been made on the Intersate 85 resurfacing project in Rowan County. When I last went through there a year ago when I was picking up the Carolina Circle Mall restroom sign, the road was still a big mess! But now, only one small part of the Interstate is still under construction.

Pictures of Wilmington's Independence Mall

While I was at the beach this week, I rode up to Wilmington and visted the Independence Mall. I had been there before, but I hadn't been to that mall since 2002.

My opinion on it is that it's a pretty nice mall. It's pretty big for a one-story mall and it has the most unusual layout imaginable as well as an odd shaped food court. The JCPenney actually had two mall entrances! Although it's not to phenominal Carolina Circle Mall standards, I admit it's a pretty cool mall. Also, I don't think I've seen a mall with a double deck carousel before.

New loop section to ease city congestion

ABC might be adding a new show about cavemen to their primetime lineup this fall, but Greensboro will hopefully be debuting the next section of the Greensboro Urban Loop this fall.

According to an article in Thursday's Greensboro News & Record, that Robert Malme emailed me today, the next segment of "Painter Blvd." is scheduled to open in late November which will hopefull be a pretty nice 18th birthday present for me.

This article is also the first media mention of the I-40 relocation to the loop. Prior to this, this information was only known to the DOT and many Roadgeeks.

From what I've seen of the current construction, crews seem to mainly be focused on the Interstate 85 interchange and the Friendly Avenue interchange. It's been taking them forever to finish the Interstate 40 interchange.

Beach Trip 2007 Road Signs

I have returned to Greensboro today after a 5 day long trip to Kure Beach, NC. As promised, I have returned with many many road sign pictures.

I have been taking pictures of road signs since I believe 1998 and I think that this is the most I have ever taken since then.

The picture above by the way is a glimpse of Raleigh's Interstate 540 from the perspective of Interstate 40, including it's latest segment known as "NC-540". I believe it was named this to allow it to possibly become a toll road in the future.

Beach Ride '07

Tomorrow I'll be heading back to Kure Beach, NC for Beach Trip 2007, despite some allergy problems I've been having the past couple of days.

I'll be spending an extra day this year so I won't be back until this coming Friday. If I have any luck hooking up to dial-up Internet on my laptop at the beach, I'll try to post something, however that's pretty optimistic.

As usual, I promise plenty of road sign pictures once I return.

This is rather pointless, but I thought I'd share this.

With some phopshopping, I was able to modify Carolina Circle Mall's emblem and make it look like Interstate 40 with the same Interstate shield colors.

North Carolina Future Interstates

This is a website I have been looking at for the past several years, but haven't had a chance to look at recently.

As the title of the post suggests, this website takes a look at some future Interstates in North Carolina. It mainly takes a look at Interstates 73 and 74, but many favorites are featured including the Greensboro Urban Loop.

Interestingly, this website mentions that the portion of the Greensboro Urban Loop under construction from Interstate 40 to Bryan Boulevard will be open by July 21, 2007, next Saturday. This was probably an old updated because I took a look at the construction yesterday and there are still no signs up at the Interstate 40 interchange. It also mentions the section from Interstate 40 to Interstate 85 currently under construction will be open by November 2007.

Road City Returns!

Alright, I now realize I've been neglecting Road City lately. Here's what's up.

First of all, I'm considering discontinuing the Roadgeek's Garfield of the Week and the Road Sign of the Week. I'm now more busy on Sundays than I used to be and it's going to get harder for me to find a Garfield comic and a road sign picture to put up here on a chronological basis.

One reason why Road City hasn't been updated recently is due to the fact that I'm mainly focussing on Carolina Circle City and the new Home of Carolina Circle Mall. I've still got to figure out the best way to manage Home of Carolina Circle Mall. I'm currently creating it with Microsoft Publisher 2003 and I can't figure out how to let pictures be saved to one's hard drive.

So don't worry. I'm going to try and put something up here when I can. Road City is far from dead.

Photo Album Update

As you all know, the photo album hosting for the Roadgeek BlogRing is done by Yahoo! Photos. Well, I've got some sad news for you tonight.

Starting in I think June, Yahoo! will no longer offer the Photo service. This makes me rather upset because I think they did a pretty good job.

I've tried Flickr, and discovered that their free service can only support 3 albums. Way too little for me!

However, I came across Webshots. Like Flickr, they have free and premium services, but the free has everything I need.

Gradually, the photo albums linked from my blogs will be switched to Webshots. During this time, some will be Webshots and some will remain Yahoo! Photos until Yahoo! Photos becomes another Carolina Circle.

I was riding down Painter Boulevard today (I-85 Bypass Portion), and I spotted two new signs at the big interchange at the bypass end in SW Greensboro. I had my camera with me to share these with everyone. Both sign are northbound.

You sort of have to zoom in to this one, but this is a sign on a ramp under construction running from I believe the future section of the Interstate 40 Bypass. I'll help you out here with what the sign says. "Exit 122: US-220 South Asheboro Exit Only".

This is a little better. As you can see, the arrows are missing from the US-220 exit sign and the Interstate shields are missing from the "Durham Raleigh" sign. Obviously, the missing Interstate shields are Interstate 40 and Interstate 85.

We are now getting to the interesting part of construction. Once they start putting up some signs, that means lots of progress. They're still saying the next section of the loop will open in 2007, but I sort of have my doubts.

Mystery Interchange

This is a very bad picture I took about a year ago, but good enough.

The Interstate 40/US-311 interchange in Winston-Salem has been confusing me for years. There are these "ghost ramps" all over the place that lead to nowhere.

Are they leftover from the bypass construction in the early '90s? Or UFO landing strips? Or something else?

If anyone knows, please let me know.

Why Billy Loves The Price is Right

A couple of years ago, Steven Swain made a post on his blog where he named 10 great things about The Price is Right. You can take a look at it here. As a follow-up to that, I’ll post my own.

Probably one of the coolest things about The Price is Right is the set. Except for a few differences, the set has mostly remained the same since the show’s debut in 1972. Although I prefer the older designs, I still love how the set still has that ‘70s feel to it even in 2007. It’s like Carolina Circle Mall in game-show form. Check out the upcoming article at Carolina Circle City for more information on that.

The music is always something I’ve enjoyed. Like the set, they’ve used the exact same theme song for 35 years! Most of the music, (Except for the newer packages) has that ‘70s funk feel to it, especially one of my favorite songs “The Big Banana”.

Those memorable announcers have always been awesome. With all respect to the late Johnny Olson, my favorite announcer has always been Rod Roddy. I was born at the exact same moment Rod yelled “Come on Down” at 11:30 AM on November 27, 1989. The doctor was watching The Price is Right. Anyway, I also got a kick out of Rod’s jackets. You never knew what extremely bright/sparkly jacket he’d wear. I have to admit Rich Fields does a pretty good job announcing. Rich shows a great deal of respect to his job and to the announcers that preceded him.

Of course, you've gotta love those Pricing Games. Plinko's a great game, but when it comes to those money games, you can't beat Punch-A-Bunch, or other classic games like Hole in One (Or Two), Clock Game, Lucky 7, Cliffhangers (Not "The Mountain Climber Game"), and many others. Heck, all of the games rock.

Some of the greatest moments of the show have come from the contestants. They’ve come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Recently, the contestants have become somewhat younger than used to, but that doesn’t matter.

I’ve always said you should always love your past. Well, a lot of my childhood memories come from The Price is Right. A dilemma would occur because Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood would be on at the same time as The Price is Right. But those days of watching The Price is Right were special. I also remember watching (Sadly being a fan) The New Price is Right with Doug Davidson when I was about 5 years old.

And finally, let’s take a look at Bob Barker for a moment. He has hosted every episode (Except for a few sick-days in 1974) of the show since it started in 1972. He is hilarious with his “Barkerisms”, like “We can’t start the rangefinder for 37 hours”. I’ve always loved how he stalls the reveals, especially during Golden Road. We will all miss him next season when the new host takes over. He deserves the rest. Have a happy retirement Bob Barker!

One Year Ago Today

Today marks the one year anniversary of when my school Pendle Hill Christian School closed.

Ever since about 2:30 PM that day when school let out, my life has changed a lot. I'm now attending a school that is just as good if not better than Pendle Hill. I've met a lot of great new people who are now my friends. And I try to stay in contact with my former classmates, although it is extremely difficult.

I first announced the situation here at Road City two days before the school closed. I simply included the Pendle Hill Lighthouse emblem with a few words and a link to a WFMY News 2 article about the situation. Unfortunately, I was not in the report. Current Urban Loop End I-85 Edition

This is what the other end of Painter Boulevard (I-85 South) looks like.

Remember, this picture was taken in June of 2006 and this scenery of this photo might look different today. I have surprisingly not been on this stretch of the loop since July, so I can't give a good description.

Unlike the other end of the loop at US-70, this is expected to be extended fairly soon as part of the new I-40 Bypass, with an optimistic prediction for late 2007.

This terminus is at US-70 and will not be extended until sometime in the next decade. Believe me, it's well worth the ridiculous amount of time.

Well, I was beginning to think they were never going to release Windows Vista at least until the year 2017. But it finally happened today.

Unfortunately for me, I can't afford it at the moment. I saw a Windows Vista Home Premium today at the Carolina Circle Mall Wal-Mart. I have to hand it to Microsoft's designers. They sure made those boxes look funky.

Until I come into some money, it'll still be Windows XP for me. But for now, enjoy this article.

I made this map of Greensboro back in 2004.

Not much has changed in 3 years, however that proposed Bryan Blvd. move has now been completed. Also notice, I didn't put Bryan Blvd's new location at its proper terminus. It doesn't really end at NC-68.

I made most of the map by hand and a little on the computer.

Urban Loop Gets Green Light

Welll, WFMY News 2 has some updates on the Greensboro Urban Loop that I'd like to share.

The DOT says that the section of the loop running from its current terminus at US-70 to US-29 is expected to start construction sometime around 2011.

This article also talks about Interstate 785. From what I've heard, Interstate 785 will leave US-29 at the Greensboro Urban Loop and travel southeast on it to its terminus at Interstate 40/85 in eastern Guilford County. Signs saying "Future Interstate 785 Corridor" have been on US-29 for almost a decade.

The new year 2007 has just officially begun.

Of course, I'd like to thank you Roadgeek BlogRing readers for making it a great year last year, and I expect great things in 2007.

Remembering 2006

Not counting Roadgeek's Garfield of the Week and the Road Sign of the Week, this will probably be the last post here at Road City for the year 2006.

2006 was the first full year for Road City, Carolina Circle City, and Flashback City. Tomorrow, it'll surely look weird when I look at the archive and see 2005, 2006, and 2007.

What really gets me is that 2004 will soon be 3 years ago while it seems like a year and a half ago. Even though 2004 was a 366 day nightmare in my life, part of me misses it for some odd reason.

For 2006, I'd say it was half 2003 in goodness and half 2004 in badness.

I'm going to save the best for last, so first, the bad stuff. The first half of 2006 included many bad events like...

On March 10 as most of you know, my former Pendle Hill Christian School closed for good. While the ripple effect that took place in the future turned out excellent, the closing was still bad. On March 8, I announced the situation to the world here at Road City. At that time, the closing was uncertain due to it being two days prior to closing. You can take a look at it here.

Several other bad things happened in the first half, but I'll keep them to myself.

Now, the good stuff. I save a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico. Sorry about that very sad joke. Anyway, the second half of 2006 was awesome. The second half of 2006 included many good events like...

Though Pendle Hill closed on March 10, my new school opened a few days later on March 13. Unfortunately, the bad part of 2006 was still going at it, so the remainder of the 2005-2006 year was bland.

However, the beginning of the 2006-2007 year on August 28 was the second official beginning of a new era. So far this school year has been the best one yet since the 2003-2004 school year. Why? Well I made several new friends including Natalie. If any of you are reading this, thanks for making this year what it is.

I also went on one of the greatest beach trips I've had in awhile back in August. Nothing like a trip down eastbound Interstate 40.

The only bad things that happened in the second half of 2006 was not being able to go on a second trip to the 2006 Dixie Classic Fair and the random nausea attack. Darn you acid-reflux!

On October 31, 2006, Bob Barker of The Price is Right announced his retirement. As we go into 2007, I'll really cherish his last 6 months of hosting the greatest game-show ever.

Well, hybrid years are always interesting and 2006 was one of them. I'll try to block the first half out of my mind and look back on the second half as a piece of history. The '00s decade in general isn't all that good, but the second half of 2006 really showed its good side.

I've been going through some videos of area Interstates I've recorded since 2003, and I'm planning on uploading them to YouTube soon.

The first video to expect is Interstate 40/85 from Greensboro to Hillsborough that I recorded in July of 2003. This video is unique in that it shows the Interstate in the "Pre-Greensboro Bypass Era" when Business 85 was still Interstate 85.
