Believe It or Not

1. Business 95 has had two designations. The first one was in Wilson and the current one is in Fayetteville. The Wilson one no longer exists.

2. Portsmouth is the only town in North Carolina that doesn't have a numbered route designation.

3. US-64 is the longest road in North Carolina (569 miles).

4. US-521 is the shortest road in North Carolina.

5. The oldest Interstate in North Carolina is Interstate 40.

6. The newest Interstate in North Carolina is Interstate 140 (Wilmington Beltway).

7. The new US-58 Bypass in Danville is very very close to entering North Carolina, but stays in Virginia.

8. The only major North Carolina cities that don't have an Interstate going through Downtown are Greensboro and Raleigh.

9. In 2007, when Interstate 40 is moved onto the new Greensboro Bypass, the interchange at Interstate 85 and Business 85 in Southwest Greensboro will be the most complex interchange in the state.

10. North Carolina gives exit numbers to all numbered freeways. Not just Interstates. South Carolina does this too.

Some to add:

North Carolina is one of the few states that does not do county roads

North Carolina has the 3rd highest gas tax in the nation. You get what you paid for in the good roads state

No tollroads exist

Other than NC, Michigan does the diamond shield too
