Field Guide to Raleigh's Roads: 11/20/05

Today I'll be discussing the new Knightdale Bypass.

For decades, US-64 east of Raleigh ran through the growing town of Knightdale. Over time, that town boomed and traffic on US-64 grew heavily. It was a nightmare in Knightdale.

But the NCDOT struck again and built the Knightdale Bypass. The bypass opened in July of 2005 and runs from the Beltline in Raleigh to the US-64/Business 64 split east of Knightdale. The old US-64 (New Bern Avenue) became Business 64.

I don't know much about this freeway because I've never been on it. But I do know that it's already brought relief for commuters and travelers to and from the Outer Banks.

Hey thanks for the useful info. You are very bright. I have a challenge for you. No where online can I find the differnce between the inner and outer beltline of I-440 and/or US64 in Raleigh, N.C. Now in traveling this weeks ago for the first time. I was given directions to a Comfort Inn off of Six Forks Rd in Raleigh via mapquest and yahoo. The dilemma is that from I-95 South towards Raleigh the directions are jacked up. Once you get on 1-40 west to Raleigh, you begin to get confused because the exit for I-440 says 64 e or 64w mapquest doesn't provide which directin to go - hence the difference between the inner and outer beltline. Which one do I take to go to exit 8b for Six Forks RD. If you can get me an answer by 2pm today that will be great if not then whenever you can.
