Roads: Underground Edition
There have been many new roads built around here over the past century. Sadly, a lot of the old ones have been closed off and sometimes even destroyed. Like I've always said, roads are just like Carolina Circle Mall. :)
But I think there are remnants of those dead roads buried underground. I actually experienced a possible unearthing of a dead road.
It happened at school sometime around February or March of 2005. We were digging out near the playground to plant some cabbage. I was digging as hard as I could, but I kept on hitting something rock hard. Some other students came over and helped me. We finally got the rock out of the way. But the rock was really asphalt that might have been part of an old road. But if it was at one time a road, what was the road?
My school is in the Four Seasons Mall area and is parallel to Patterson St. (NC-6). One possible road that rock I found could have been was part of an old allignment of Patterson St. Even current roads have sometimes been located in former locations.
I found out another clue the other week. Someone told me that there is a piece of old road that is blocked off with railing in the woods near the intersection of High Point Road and Holden Road. Could that road have been a section of the lost road of Pendle Hill Christian School?
All of these clues lead to a possible underground road underneath my school's playground. Of course, that piece of asphalt I found could have just been scrap building material.
